This document provides details on other services offered by Google.
The World-Wide Web (or simply Web) have come a long way since its inception (to general public) in 1993. The well known directories of the mid-1990's like Yahoo! became search engine-enabled, and years later, turned into a portal. Google is a successor of these services.
This article, which is intended to evolve with the technological changes, briefly surveys some of the services Google (in Canada) provides that may be useful to the CUPFA community. The purpose is not endorsement but to inform.
Google provides a variety of services for different locales around the world in several spoken languages, including English and Fran?is. One of the language tools includes a language translator. These services could be accessed via a desktop or a mobile device.
One of the main services of Google is indexing and searching. Google indexes a large number of resources and provides a very fast ability to search through them using basic techniques such as keywords or using more advanced search techniques such as regular expressions. For example, one could enter Concordia University or "Concordia+University" (notice the double quotes) for a more precise search. These resources could be in plain text, HTML, Adobe PDF, Microsoft PowerPoint, and even images. It can also search through postings on newsgroups.
Google Scholar is a specialized search for academic documents (papers, articles, and so forth). This can be quite useful when one wants to reduce the unwanted search results being returned in response to a query.
Google Print is a specialized search for books in print.
Google can be useful in obtaining definitions of terms. To use that, enter define:Your
Term in the search field, where replace Your Term by the term whose
definition you wish to obtain.
Among other services, Google provides country specific daily news and maps, even code for the computer savvy.
