- Lartiste multidisciplinaire
Lise-Helene Larin is a
multidisciplinary artist whose non-figurative 3D animated films question
sculpture and painting. As the virtual camera infiltrated her work, it
framed, froze and fixed her virtual mise-en-sc?e into simulated photos
which play on perception and through which she developed an unusual
process of representation by "constructing" images using virtual
polygons arranged in space. She thereby creates strange worlds the
nature of which is "algorithmical", figurations that escape photographic
representation as the referent from reality is now absent.
Representation in this case is more of a cognitive research than a skill
to mimic nature. More ...

Baphomet / Tramontano. By Bonnie Baxter. November 15,
2006-January 13, 2007. FOFA Gallery Vitrines, EV Building,
Concordia University. The FOFA Gallery Vitrines is featuring Bonnie
Baxter's series of ten large digital prints titled Baphomet and her
video, Tramontano (music by composer Michael Oesterle). Baphomet's
stunning imagery uses layering to create a self-portrayal that
references the individual while alienating the image. Starting from a
series of "head-shots" the artist layers these photographs with images
drawn from a collection amassed over 30 years. Using digital photography
and printing Baxter is able to produce an infinite array of combinations
that redefine and recreate the portraits. The result is a series that
speaks of the ever-shifting identity of the individual, as writer
Christine Unger states, "they insist that we are different people at
each moment in our life, a blend of body and spirit infused with the
significance of a specific time and place." A reception to celebrate the
exhibitions will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 5:30- 7:30 PM, FOFA
Gallery Atrium.

Jon Paul Fiorentino's collection of poetry entitled The Theory of the
Loser Class (Coach House Books) was highlighted in the fall, 2006
edition of the Concordia University Magazine (p.31). Jon is a part-time
faculty member in the Department of English. Daniel Goldberg of the CUV
writes: "Playing on the work of 19th-century social theorist Thorstein
Veblen's groundbreaking study of the "leisure class," Fiorentino does
for the lost and the lonely, the alienated and the geeked out what
Veblen did for the nouveau riche: identify a culture, establish a voice,
declare a manifesto." The book has also just been shortlisted for
the A.M. Klein Prize for
poetry!
